Formations Guide

Formations and custom tactics for EA Sports FC 27: the attack shapes, defensive blocks and balanced defaults, with the instructions that decide matches under the new run types and manual defending.

Quick Answer: Which Formation Should You Use?

EA Sports FC 27 checks three formation families, in this order: 4-3-3 first (the balanced default — width, a single pivot, and room for the new run types), then 4-2-3-1 (the defensive two-pivot shape that protects against counters), then 4-4-2 (the flat, simple shape that punishes overcommitment). Formations themselves never decide matches alone — the custom tactics behind them do.

Quick Answer: Which Formation Should You Use?

Change one thing at a time. A formation switch and a tactic switch in the same half tells you nothing about which one fixed the problem.

Attack Shapes: Where the Goals Come From

Attack-minded setups put five players ahead of the ball and accept fewer screens behind it. The 4-3-3 attack variant and the 4-1-2-1-2 narrow diamond are the two families: width against deep blocks, and central overload against mid blocks. Both lean on FC 27's new run types — triggered diagonal runs are what separate a good chance from a clear one.

  • 4-3-3 Attack — wingers held high, fullbacks overlap; the default possession-attack shape.
  • 4-1-2-1-2 (2) — the narrow diamond; two strikers and a CAM for central combinations.
  • 4-2-3-1 Attack — the balanced shape pushed five forward through fullback instructions.

Defense Shapes: How You Stop the Counter

Defensive setups trade attack numbers for rest-defense. The 5-2-1-2 and the 4-5-1 are the two usable families: five-at-the-back for lead protection, and a packed midfield five for teams that lose matches through the middle. Both work with FC 27's manual defending — a compact shape makes your 1v1 defending a tool rather than a risk.

  • 5-2-1-2 — wingbacks defend deep; the strongest shape for protecting a lead.
  • 4-5-1 — a flat midfield five; the shape for closing central passing lanes.
  • 4-4-2 Defensive — the classic block; simple, compact, hard to break on the counter.
